How to Build a Great Layer Profile

Your Layer profile is a reflection of you — your interests, hobbies, experiences, favorite things, and the stories you've collected along the way.

But when you're staring at an empty profile for the first time, there's an obvious question:

What should I add?

The good news is that there's no perfect Layer profile. Yours should simply feel like yours.

If you're not sure where to begin, start with five Layers that tell us something about who you are.

Start With 5 Things That Define You

You don't need to build your entire profile at once. Think about five things already in your life that have a story behind them.

1. Something tied to a hobby

What do you use for something you love doing?

Maybe it's your golf clubs, running shoes, fishing gear, gaming setup, cookware, camera, guitar, or home gym.

If it's connected to something you genuinely enjoy, it probably belongs on your Layer.

2. Something you're proud to own

Not everything needs to be expensive or rare.

Maybe you finally bought the watch you'd wanted for years. Maybe it's your first car. A great pair of boots. Your favorite piece of furniture. Or simply something you researched forever and would recommend to anyone.

If you're proud to have it, share it.

3. Something you created or built

Some of the best Layers aren't things you bought at all.

Share the deck you built, a room you renovated, a recipe you've perfected, your garden, a piece of artwork, a custom PC, or a project you're proud of.

If you made it, it has a story.

4. Something connected to a memory

Sometimes an ordinary item becomes meaningful because of the story behind it.

A jersey from an unforgettable game. A souvenir from a favorite trip. Something passed down through your family. Your child's first pair of shoes. A signed piece of memorabilia.

These are the Layers that help other people understand why something matters to you.

5. Something that represents one of your biggest interests

Think about the things people who know you would immediately associate with you.

Golf. Fitness. Fashion. Parenting. Cooking. College football. Cars. Music. Travel. Home improvement. Collecting.

Now find something in your life that represents one of those interests.

That's a Layer.

Don't Just Show It. Tell the Story.

A photo tells people what something is.

Your Layer Story tells them why you chose to share it.

You don't need to write an essay. A few sentences can explain why you bought something, how you use it, where it came from, why you'd recommend it, or the memory attached to it.

Instead of:

“My golf clubs.”

Try:

“I finally upgraded my irons after playing the same set for almost ten years. I tested a few different options, but these immediately felt right and haven't left the bag since.”

That's what turns an item into a Layer.

Let Your Interests Organize Your Profile

As you create Layers, Interest Tags help organize your profile around the things you're into.

Your golf Layers might live under Golf or Golf Accessories.

Your gym equipment might fall under Home Fitness.

Your jerseys and memorabilia might connect through Team Pride or College Football.

Over time, those individual Layers begin to build a much bigger picture.

One Layer tells us something you like.

Your profile tells us who you are.

Find Your Communities

Your interests don't stop at your profile.

Layer Communities bring together people who share similar passions, whether that's Golf Life, New Parents, Fanatics, Fitness at Home, Kitchen Creators, or something completely different.

Joining Communities gives you another way to discover Layers, products, ideas, and people through interests you already care about.

And as your own profile grows, other people can discover what you bring to those Communities too.

Your Layer Doesn't Have to Be Finished

This might be the most important thing to remember.

Your Layer is supposed to grow with you.

You'll discover something new.

Take a trip.

Start a hobby.

Finish a project.

Buy something you love.

Create something you're proud of.

Make a memory worth keeping.

Add it.

There's no finish line and there's no perfect profile.

Start with five things.

Tell us why they matter.

And keep adding Layers as life gives you more stories to share.

Your life has layers. Show us yours.
